General Diatomaceous Earth Information and Safety

Diatomaceous earth is a remarkable, all-natural product made from tiny fossilized water plants. Diatomaceous Earth is a naturally occurring siliceous sedimentary mineral compound from microscopic skeletal remains of unicellular algae-like plants called diatoms. These plants have been part of the earth's ecology since prehistoric times. 30 million years ago the diatoms built up into deep, chalky deposits of diatomite. The diatoms are mined and ground up to render a powder that looks and feels like talcum powder to us. It is a mineral based pesticide. DE is approximately 3% magnesium, 33% silicon, 19% calcium, 5% sodium, 2% iron and many other trace minerals such as titanium, boron, manganese, copper and zirconium. Diatomaceous Earth is a natural (not calcined or flux calcined) compound. Diatomaceous Earth is a natural grade diatomite. However, the continual breathing of any dust should he absolutely avoided.

WHAT IS CODEX OR "FOOD GRADE" DIATOMACEOUS EARTH?

For D.E. to be called "Codex," it must meet the following requirements:

Item Requirement Our Results
Arsenic (ppm) not more than 10 ppm <10
Lead (ppm) not more than 10 ppm <10
Non-Siliceous Substance % not more than 25% on dried basis 11.0%
PH passes test 7.3
Loss on Drying % natural powders not more than 10% 6.2
Loss on Ignition natural powders not more than 7% on the dried basis <7%

These Recommended portions are based on the many testimonials, and any adjustments to these portions can be made based on your own experience and the weight of the animal.

Diatomaceous earth (DE) Fossil Shell Flour has been reported in scientific literature to absorb methyl mercury, E. coli, endotoxins, viruses (including poliovirus), organophosphate pesticide residues, drug residues, and protein, perhaps even the proteinaceous toxins produced by some intestinal infections.

Pyrethroid insecticide residues probably also bind to diatomaceous earth, since pyrethrins from Chrysanthemum flowers bind to and are stabilized by this material. The only brand of pure DE currently recommended is from us.

This page is set up for educational purposes and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or conditions.  We receive many success stories from customers who have been using diatomaceous earth in their diet and who are very pleased with the results.

Safety

Only food grade diatom should be used for consumption as our product contains less than 0.5% Cystallin Silicon, and so does not cause silicosis

Are there any safety concerns with DE?

Yes, you must wear a dust mask when applying it as it can irritate the mucous membranes in the nose and mouth. Once the DE dust has settled it won't bother you. The continual breathing of any dust should he absolutely avoided.
